The reason is an ode to detail when it comes to preserving the private residence of Jo\u00e3o Frederico Ludovice, Architect of King D. Jo\u00e3o V in the 18th century, in a building that survived the earthquake of 1755.<\/em><\/p>\n

Lan\u00e7o por isso, ao alto nesta partilha, as minhas p\u00e9talas ao investidor Jacques Chahine e Miguel C\u00e2ncio Martins (que assinou projectos como Buddha Bar em Paris, o Opium em Londres e o hotel Quinta da Comporta), ambos mentores e respons\u00e1veis pela recupera\u00e7\u00e3o deste pal\u00e1cio numa morada que estende a qualidade da marca de Lisboa.<\/p>\n

No in\u00edcio do s\u00e9c. XVIII e na sua busca de uma resid\u00eancia privada, o arquitecto Jo\u00e3o Federico Ludovice chega a Lisboa comissionado pelo Rei D. Jo\u00e3o V e no alto de uma das magistrais setes colinas de Lisboa, construiu aquela que seria a sua casa.<\/p>\n

At the beginning of the 18th century, in his search for a private residence, the architect Jo\u00e3o Federico Ludovice arrived in Lisbon commissioned by King D. Jo\u00e3o V, and on top of one of the masterful seven hills of Lisbon, he built what would be his home.<\/em><\/p>\n

Ao chegar, deslumbramo-nos logo imponente fachada de cinco pisos, num pal\u00e1cio que nos convida a entrar por uma majestosa porta central com pilares decorados, janelas bordadas a pedra, e paredes de imaculados azulejos azuis e brancos do s\u00e9c. XVIII. No hall uma tela gigante em homenagem a Jo\u00e3o Frederico Ludovice.<\/p>\n

Upon arrival, we are immediately dazzled by the imposing five-story facade of a palace that invites us to enter through a majestic central door with decorated pillars, stone-bordered windows, and walls of immaculate blue and white tiles from the 18th century. In the hall, there is a giant canvas in homage to Jo\u00e3o Frederico Ludovice.<\/em><\/p>\n

Com varandas panor\u00e2micas sobre Lisboa – numa delas fica a suite 204 onde dormi numa viagem no tempo e sem ouvir um \u00fanico ru\u00eddo da azafama nocturna. Todos os quartos e as salas respiram tetos em reboco, mas os viajantes da cidade rendem-se \u00e0 majestosa escadaria que honra a alma de Lisboa e onde d\u00e1 gosto deambular de olhos ao alto pelos pormenores t\u00e3o bem restaurados casados com a escolhas de Miguel C\u00e2ncio Martins.<\/p>\n

With panoramic balconies overlooking Lisbon – one of them being the Suite 204 where I slept on a trip through time without hearing a single noise from the nocturnal bustle. All the rooms and lounges feature plaster ceilings, but city travelers succumb to the majestic staircase that honors the soul of Lisbon, where it’s enjoyable to wander with eyes raised to the well-restored details paired with Miguel C\u00e2ncio Martins’ choices.<\/em><\/p>\n

Noutras vidas, o palacete edificado no s\u00e9culo XVIII, foi morada do Solar do Vinho do Porto e tamb\u00e9m por isso a eleva\u00e7\u00e3o ao vinho no hotel \u00e9 enaltecida. Seja nos tapetes que elogiam vistas panor\u00e2micas de vinhas no hall de entrada, seja nas esculturas em vime que ocupam os tetos do hall do hotel da autoria da artista Ambre Babzoe, seja na carta de vinhos que tem tamb\u00e9m a miss\u00e3o de representar as diferentes regi\u00f5es do pa\u00eds. Podem esperar provas de vinho e eventos tem\u00e1ticos e uma loja do Instituto do Vinho e do Douro e do Porto (IVDP), com liga\u00e7\u00e3o tamb\u00e9m \u00e0 rua, fazendo do hotel tamb\u00e9m um marco para os amantes de enologia.<\/p>\n

A experi\u00eancia Ludovice<\/strong><\/p>\n

Um dos pormenores que mais me seduziu foram as paredes forradas a azulejos seculares, meticulosamente recuperados, e que ajudam a contar a longa hist\u00f3ria do Pal\u00e1cio. E se a obra precisou de tr\u00eas anos, mais esperar\u00edamos para ter acesso a estes sessenta e um quartos, que elogiam a alma da nossa Lisboa. At\u00e9 a luz da cidade est\u00e1 elogiada pela claraboia quase invis\u00edvel, que com candeeiros suspensos e por frescos jardins verticais, ilumina de forma invulgar o restaurante que \u00e9 tamb\u00e9m a sala de pequenos almo\u00e7os.<\/p>\n

In other lives, the mansion built in the 18th century was once the home of the Solar do Vinho do Porto, and therefore the hotel’s elevation of wine is also celebrated. Whether it’s the carpets that praise panoramic views of vineyards in the entrance hall, the wicker sculptures that occupy the ceilings of the hotel’s hall by artist Ambre Babzoe, or the wine list that also aims to represent different regions of the country. Wine tastings, themed events, and a shop from the Instituto do Vinho e do Douro e do Porto (IVDP), which also connects to the street, make the hotel a landmark for wine enthusiasts as well.<\/em><\/p>\n

The Ludovice Experience<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

One of the details that most seduced me were the walls lined with centuries-old tiles, meticulously restored, which help to tell the long history of the Palace. And if the work took three years, we can expect no less for access to these sixty-one rooms, which praise the soul of our Lisbon. Even the city’s light is praised by the almost invisible skylight, which, with suspended lamps and frescoed vertical gardens, unusually illuminates the restaurant that also serves breakfast.<\/em><\/p>\n

Miguel C\u00e2ncio Martins fez quest\u00e3o de recuperar tudo o que fosse poss\u00edvel e nesse testemunho, os corrim\u00f5es e as escadarias em m\u00e1rmore, os frisos, o tijolo de burro exposto, os azulejos centen\u00e1rios e os tetos de reboco s\u00e3o verdadeiros tesouros intactos. Sempre com a supervis\u00e3o da Dire\u00e7\u00e3o Geral do Patrim\u00f3nio Cultural: DGPC e antes da obra estudos hist\u00f3ricos, ao n\u00edvel da pintura, dos azulejos, da estrutura, foram estudados minuciosamente. E porque este \u00e9 um hotel hist\u00f3rico, imaginem que mesmo no final das escava\u00e7\u00f5es foi encontrado um dos esqueletos mais antigos de Lisboa, com cinco mil anos.<\/p>\n

Os quartos, incluindo tr\u00eas suites, e apresentam-se em sete tipologias do \u2018Cozy Room\u2019 ao \u2018Ludovice Prestige\u2019, com quatro tem\u00e1ticas crom\u00e1ticas distintas: bege, azul, rosa e verde \u00e1gua, com m\u00f3veis desenhados pelo arquiteto e de orgulhosa produ\u00e7\u00e3o nacional.Eu fiquei numa suite Ludovice Prestige, a 204.<\/p>\n

Miguel C\u00e2ncio Martins made sure to recover everything possible, and in that testimony, the marble handrails and staircases, the friezes, the exposed donkey brick, the centuries-old tiles, and the plaster ceilings are true intact treasures. Always with the supervision of the General Directorate for Cultural Heritage: DGPC and before the work, historical studies at the level of painting, tiles, and structure were meticulously studied. And because this is a historic hotel, imagine that even at the end of the excavations, one of the oldest skeletons in Lisbon, dating back five thousand years, was found.<\/em><\/p>\n

The rooms, including three suites, are presented in seven typologies from ‘Cozy Room’ to ‘Ludovice Prestige’, with four distinct chromatic themes: beige, blue, pink, and aqua green, with furniture designed by the architect and proudly of national production. I stayed in a Ludovice Prestige suite, 204.<\/em><\/p>\n

Elevem expectativas porque h\u00e1 quartos com frescos originais restaurados, outros com pain\u00e9is de azulejos pintados \u00e0 m\u00e3o e ainda outros com madeira trinchada nos tetos. Duas antigas cozinhas foram transformadas em quartos, mas nas grandes suites a estrutura permanece a original.<\/p>\n

A quem passar pelo hotel para um copo no bar, almo\u00e7ar e jantar no restaurante Federico – tanto que lhe vou dedicar outra partilha mais a frente – n\u00e3o deixem de subir as escadas para descobrir a lind\u00edssima capela com s\u00edmbolos ma\u00e7\u00f3nicos e inscri\u00e7\u00f5es hebraicas.<\/p>\n

Raise your expectations because there are rooms with restored original frescoes, others with hand-painted tile panels, and still others with wooden coffered ceilings. Two former kitchens have been transformed into rooms, but the original structure remains in the large suites.<\/em><\/p>\n

For those who stop by the hotel for a drink at the bar, lunch or dinner at the Federico restaurant – which I will dedicate another post to later – don’t forget to climb the stairs to discover the beautiful chapel with Masonic symbols and Hebrew inscriptions.<\/em><\/p>\n

Com os valores da marca francesa de Mathilde e Bertrand Thomas, sempre a enaltecer os ingredientes naturais, podem marcar tratamentos faciais e corporais inspirados nos protocolos de assinatura Vinoth\u00e9rapie da Caudalie. Sou suspeita porque uso alguns produtos da marca, com nota vista para a linha de praia, para mim a melhor de todo o sempre e que nunca mais larguei desde que lan\u00e7aram.<\/p>\n

Miguel C\u00e2ncio Martins e Jacques Chahine, sempre quiseram ter um hotel em Lisboa, algo simb\u00f3lico e representativo da cidade e sendo o primeiro edif\u00edcio a ocupar um quarteir\u00e3o inteiro no tempo da sua constru\u00e7\u00e3o, o palacete \u00e9 um marco de inspira\u00e7\u00e3o para os edif\u00edcios Pombalinos, aquando da reconstru\u00e7\u00e3o da cidade lisboeta pelo apote\u00f3tico Marqu\u00eas de Pombal e s\u00f3 por isso merece a visita. Sem d\u00favida uma grande homenagem \u00e0 Lisboa que ainda \u00e9 nossa.<\/p>\n

Miguel C\u00e2ncio Martins and Jacques Chahine always wanted to have a hotel in Lisbon, something symbolic and representative of the city. As the first building to occupy an entire block at the time of its construction, the mansion is a landmark of inspiration for Pombaline buildings, during the reconstruction of the Lisbon city by the glorious Marqu\u00eas de Pombal, and for that alone it is worth a visit. Undoubtedly, a great tribute to Lisbon that is still ours.<\/em><\/p>\n
